This 1920s bungalow in Sydney’s East has been updated to suit a young family. A poor 1970s rear yard addition was carefully removed from the original house and historic details preserved. A new addition to the rear has a contemporary architectural and interior language inspired by the old.

The existing house is highly decorative to the street elevation only: it is rendered and modelled with some complex corbelling and fretwork. In stark contrast, the side elevations of the house are completely unadorned. The new additions takes its cue from this diminution in decoration and presents are totally flat elevation to the rear garden. Hence the public face of the house is decorative and frilly, while the private face is quiet, honest and unadorned. It is the unpretentious face of private family life.

N HOUSE BY STUDIOGREENBLUE

by Yvan / December 14, 2010

Via @designboom, an energy efficient house in Japan with concrete beams that store heat and act as draft deflectors in a treeless and windy environment. These louvered sections inside the house affect air and light penetration while providing structural support. More at StudioGreenBlue.

EM DESIGNBOOM:

Using the energy of nature, the warmth of sunlight and winds as starting points, japanese studiogreenblue have designed ‘n house’ located in saitama prefecture, japan.

The site is situation on an inland area in the kanto-plain, the hottest place in japan, with grounds surrounded by fields of spring onion. in such a harsh, dry environment, the inhabitants of the house, wanted a place which was warm
and private.

for the design, the architects decided on a concrete structure, for its big calorific capacity. the beams store heat, allow light to penetrate, bear horizontal power and reduce the cold draft by using the concrete as a louver. the house has an opening, like a gate, to shut out sunlight and allow more
wind to pass through.

Generally in japanese houses there is a ‘central pillar’ which supports the house, however in this circumstance the environmental aspect became the most important problem. The concrete louver provide privacy and gives the house
its overall structure.

LEGO Group presents an animation of The Lego House experience center designed by BIG.

Post retirado de outro blog – Dezain.net

Para saber mais, no blog Dezeen.com tem uma matéria um pouco mais aprofundada:

BIG‘s Lego House resembles a stack of Lego bricks rising from a public square in the company’s home town of Billund, Denmark.

Inside, the bricks will house exhibition spaces, a café and a shop, while several roof top gardens and sheltered spaces beneath the building will be accessible to the public.”

“The LEGO House:
Will cover an area of 80 by 100 meters and it will be approximately 30 meters tall.
Will feature a total of 7,600 square meters – including exhibition areas, a café, a LEGO store and a public square.
Will be built at the center of the town of Billund, and many entrances will open up the building to the surrounding area.
Will be built in collaboration between KIRKBI A/S, the LEGO Foundation and the LEGO Group, but the LEGO Group will handle the daily operation of the LEGO House once finished.”
